When a pregnancy ends before 20 weeks gestation, it is referred to as early pregnancy loss. The pregnancy may end in a miscarriage, or it may be an ectopic or molar pregnancy.
The loss of a pregnancy, no matter how early, can leave parents with a sense of loss. Although there may not be physical changes others can see, bonding has taken place between the mother and fetus. If you need help or support in recovering from the loss of a pregnancy, talk to your physician.
Dealing with the Loss
Whenever a pregnancy ends early, the emotional healing can take longer than the physical healing. Both parents need time to grieve the lost pregnancy. You need to be aware that most of the time there was nothing you could have done to prevent the loss. Most women go on to have normal pregnancies in the future.
Most hospitals or communities have a support group for parents who have suffered a pregnancy loss. You will be able to talk to people who have had the same or similar experience. Ask your doctor for a referral if you are having trouble coping with the feelings that accompany the loss.
