What does OBGYN mean? The “OBs” are obstetricians, which are the people who provide prenatal care and deliver babies. The “GYNs” are gynecologists, which are physicians who can treat women’s health issues. “OB-GYNs” are the doctors that practice both obstetrics and gynecology. Most of the doctors at Mt. Auburn are OB-GYNs, while a couple of our doctors specialize in gynecology. Choosing which doctor you want to be your first gynecologist is an important decision, and it involves asking yourself and the doctors a lot of questions.
What are your specific needs?
Do you have a chronic disease? If you have a chronic condition like heart disease, epilepsy or diabetes, you might want to ask your doctor if they have any experience treating patients who are affected by the same disease. You should also ask your doctor about their subspecialties; it is important to see a doctor who has knowledge about the specific condition for which you are looking to get treated.. Are you looking for treatment for infertility, pelvic floor disorders, hormone disorders, sexually transmitted diseases or something else? Fortunately, all the doctors at Mt. Auburn OBGYN have experience working with a vast range of conditions and are prepared to answer any questions you might have.
What do other people say about them?
Do you know anybody who has been treated by your doctor? Have you found any reviews about the doctor? Has your doctor won any awards? When answering these questions, see if people mention any specific qualities that you value in a physician. Some qualities to look out for are good bedside manner, compassion and capability. You can find these qualities in a doctor who listens to your concerns and works with you when making a treatment plan, who thoroughly answers all your questions, who cares about you and your treatment outcomes and who is capable and experienced. Hearing what other people have to say about the doctor is a good way to gauge these qualities.
Are they easily accessible?
This might seem inconsequential, but when choosing your first gynecologist it is important to look at how accessible they are to you. Are they within reasonable driving distance from you? Do they accept your insurance? How long does it take them to get back to you if you have any questions? It is important to choose a doctor that you feel comfortable travelling to and is available to promptly answer any of your questions whenever they arise.
